Volunteering at the Butterfly, Native Plant, and Pollinator Garden
Volunteers help care for this long-standing garden, which has evolved to support butterflies, native plants, and a wider range of pollinators. This shared work helps keep the garden a welcoming habitat and a beautiful space for park visitors to enjoy.
Purpose
The garden supports the growth of native Pennsylvania plants that provide food, shelter, and habitat for butterflies, bees, and other beneficial pollinators.
Location
The garden is located at the main marina near the boat slips.
What to Expect
Volunteering in the garden is rewarding and hands-on. Workdays may include tasks such as weeding, mulching, lifting, planting, trimming, and using basic gardening tools. Volunteers should be comfortable working independently, walking on uneven ground, and being outdoors in varied weather conditions.
Please note that this is a small volunteer group without on-site staff, so we are not able to provide accommodations, individualized supervision, modified roles, or transportation assistance for volunteers who may require them.
Time Commitment
The typical time commitment is about two hours, two to three times per month, with flexibility based on volunteer availability. After receiving initial guidance on which plants to remove, prune, or preserve, volunteers may work independently in the garden or join others on scheduled workdays.
Ways to Help
- Remove invasive plants that smother or damage native plants.
- Cut back and trim specified plants.
- Keep pathways clear for safe garden access.
- Plant new native vegetation.
Thank you for helping support a healthy, welcoming garden for pollinators, native plants, and park visitors.
Butterflies are ecologically important as pollinators, food sources, and indicators of ecosystem health, playing a crucial role in plant reproduction and , supporting biodiversity.
